What skincare ingredients should I avoid in pregnancy?

Experts agree some skincare ingredients are no-nos while you are pregnant. These include retinol, hydroquinone, and certain essential oils (such as camphor, clary sage, clove and rosemary). There is some debate surrounding salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide - some doctors recommend avoiding them in pregnancy while others suggest they are okay in small doses. Our entire By Sarah London collection is free from all of these so you can take your pick from our much-loved products while you're with bump, breastfeeding... and beyond.

Pregnancy skincare for acne

Still searching for that elusive 'pregnancy glow?' If your bump has come with a side serving of acne, don't panic. Many spot-fighting formulas contain salicylic acid, retinol or benzoyl peroxide which means they may be not suitable for use during pregnancy. Instead, check out our clever By Sarah London Ally Blemish Recovery Oil. Its power player? Our special upcycled hemp seed oil that boasts 52 per cent more antioxidants than standard hemp seed oil, as well as linoleic acid that acne-prone skins often lack.

"This facial oil is my favourite, and always helps calm my skin." - Feefo customer review

Paired with jojoba oil and Vitamin E, this non-greasy serum instantly calms down angry skin while shrinking spots. Use it at night to target individual zits or in the morning, too, pressing it into larger areas to keep breakouts at bay. It can even be used on the chest or back – common areas for hormonal acne.

Our By Sarah London Balancer Oil-to-milk Cleanser is also a saviour, giving skin a deep cleanse without leaving it stripped or sensitive. As with all our range, it's fragrance-free – ideal if you're finding scents a little overpowering right now!

"This is the second bottle of body oil I have bought so far and I love it! Applied after a bath or shower, my skin always feels so supple and healthy. I can still feel the benefit on my skin the next day, it’s wonderful!" - Feefo customer review

"The best for sensitive pregnant skin. I would recommend all By Sarah products –  face and body – for itchy sensitive pregnancy skin," shared Sara, one of our delighted customers, in a Feefo review.

Each morning and evening, massage it into your bump, bust, hips and upper thigh area using slow sweeping motions. It's the perfect blend to enjoy while you recite any hypnobirthing affirmations or if you just want to take some time out after a long day on your feet.

Instantly, it gets to work hydrating and soothing the skin while adding an extra glow. But the prebiotic mist boasts a long-term turbo action, too. It boosts the skin's own microbiome and protective barrier leaving it stronger, plumper and calmer, even in acne, rosacea and eczema-prone complexions.

Boosted Skincare

Knowing the unbelievable skin benefits Vitamin C can deliver, we've been determined to bring you a blend that lets sensitive skin in on the action, too! And we didn't stop there. We spent many months working hard behind-the-scenes to bring you an alternative to retinol. A plant-powered oil – suitable for even the most sensitive of skins – that offers retinol-like properties without the irritation. Both our Vitamin C+E Daily Radiance Booster and Bakuchiol Daily Recovery Booster have been designed with the most sensitive skin in mind, and slot seamlessly into your morning and evening skincare routine as the final "boosted" step. The result? A visible skin transformation without redness, irritation or sensitivity – for day and night.
