How does the menopause and peri-menopause affect skin?

The peri-menopause typically starts in your mid-40s and refers to the time when periods start to become more irregular. You still have oestrogen at this point but you might begin to experience a temperamental complexion including breakouts, rosacea, menopause skin rash, dry or oily patches.

The menopause officially begins one year after your last period and leads to a sharp decline in levels of the oestrogen hormone. This drop has an impact on collagen production resulting in drier, thinner and less elastic skin.

Alongside acne and dryness, many women notice increased sensitivity, itchy menopause skin, redness and flushing.

Which ingredients and products are best for menopausal skin?

It's all about counteracting those plummeting collagen levels. Opt for restorative, soothing plant oils and natural, hydrating actives that will calm and cosset, pumping back all that lost moisture.

Our fragrance-free, lightweight, everyday Hero Facial Oil pairs Evening Primrose, Apricot, Argan with soothing vitamin E and other luxurious natural plant oils to revitalise and nourish, adding a gentle dewy luminosity that menopausal skin often craves.

To address signs of ageing and pigmentation, choose products containing ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid for hydration, natural retinol alternatives like Bakuchiol for cell turnover and collagen synthesis, antioxidants like vitamin C to combat free radical damage, and peptides for firming and plumping.

To soothe itchy menopause skin, opt for our calming Maven Daily Moisturiser face cream to instantly soothe and deeply hydrate.

Finally, a broad-spectrum PA++++ sunscreen should be an everyday essential in your skincare routine to protect your skin all year-round and to prevent photo-ageing. Our Serene Daily SPF 50+ is dermatologically-approved for sensitive skin and enriched with ginseng, apple and peach extracts to replenish and nourish your skin whilst also providing the highest possible UVA and UVB protection.

"Since starting the perimenopause, my skin took a turn for the worst. It became very sensitive to all my previous skincare products, red, inflamed, flaky nose, and breakouts. I came across By Sarah products and they have completely calmed any sensitivity. If you are on the fence just go for it. I can’t recommend enough."
