Sustainable beauty products: the simple swaps worth making
From our planet-friendly packaging to our innovative upcycled skincare ingredients, sustainability has always been at the heart of By Sarah London. And as this year's World Earth Day approaches (22nd April), there's no better time to give your beauty routine an eco-over.
Just a few little switches can make a B-I-G difference. So, here are the low-carbon swaps to make now...
Choose beauty products with recyclable packaging
One of the simplest steps you can make towards a low-carbon future for our planet? Adding a recycling bin to your bathroom. I was shocked to discover only 50 per cent of our recyclable bathroom waste is recycled versus 90 percent in our kitchen. If everyone recycled one more toilet roll tube it would save enough to go round the M25 38 times while recycling just one bleach bottle saves enough energy to power a street light for 6.5 hours, according to Recycle Now.
Even better? Opt for reusable packaging. All By Sarah London clear glass jars and bottles are endlessly recyclable, and they also make handy vases and storage for things like jewellery. We also never use single-use cellophane or plastic wrapping.
Try our By Sarah London Reusable Pump, for just £2, that can be inserted into our much-loved Body Oil and Balancer Oil-to-milk Cleanser then used time and time again once you've finished up a bottle.
Streamline your skincare routine
It's not just the way we dispose of our empties that impacts the planet but the amount we consume in the first place. Just think of all the energy needed to produce and transport all those products. But cutting back needn't mean sacrificing your beauty and skincare rituals.
The entire By Sarah London collection is designed to be multi-tasking and designed with simplicity while remaining beautifully luxurious and effective. Instead of working your way through a shedload of sheet masks, enjoy our exquisite Hero Facial Oil combined with facial massage every evening; or sideline countless face wipes and cotton pads for a cleanse with our Organic Muslin Face Cloth - just £3.95 and can be washed and reused time and time again.
Use upcycled skincare ingredients
I'm always on the lookout for new, innovative ingredients to power our By Sarah London products and the way they're sourced is so important to me. Some of our hero ingredients, such as hemp seed oil and raspberry seed oil, are surplus from the food and juicing industry which we save from heading to landfill. The oil is extracted using a cold, low energy, solvent-free process. No new materials created; no existing resources wasted.
But these plant-based powerhouses aren't just kind to the planet. They're bursting with goodness for your skin, too. Our upcycled hemp seed oil boasts 52 per cent more antioxidants than standard hemp seed oil while our upcycled raspberry seed oil is packed with 20 per cent more Vitamin E.
Other ways to clamp down on your carbon footprint - fast?
According to the World Earth Day campaign, making sure your recyclables are clean, empty and dry would save on tonnes going to landfill unnecessarily. Similarly, we should avoid recycling anything smaller than a credit card, such as paperclips, since these can jam the recycling equipment. Finally, don't forget to swap out plastic wash bags for sustainable versions like our own Love & Joy Beauty Bag, made from 100% organic and Fair Trade cotton. See? Small tweaks but, oh, what a difference they can make to our planet and its future.
