Sustainability in the home: the bedroom

Creating a sustainable home isn't just about what happens in the kitchen or bathroom—our bedrooms are spaces of rest, renewal, and calm, and they can be just as important in our sustainability efforts. The choices we make here—from bedding to lighting and even skincare—can reduce our environmental impact and help us lead a more eco-conscious lifestyle.

Did you know that the average adult spends around one third of their life in their bedroom? If you’re hoping to go green in your home, your bedroom is a great place to start. Not only does making sustainable choices in your bedroom help our planet, but it can also help you.

Opt for energy-efficient lighting

The lighting in your bedroom sets the mood for relaxation, but it can also affect your energy consumption. To make your bedroom more sustainable, switch to energy-efficient LED bulbs, which use up to 75% less energy and last much longer than traditional incandescent bulbs.

If possible, use natural light during the day to reduce your need for artificial lighting. Consider installing dimmer switches or smart lighting systems that allow you to control brightness and power usage more effectively, creating a calming and eco-friendly atmosphere.

Choose natural, organic bedding

Your bedding can have a significant environmental impact, especially when you consider how much time we spend sleeping. Opt for bedding made from organic cotton, bamboo, or linen—materials that are grown and harvested without harmful pesticides and are gentle on the earth. Not only are these fabrics breathable and durable, but they are also kind to your skin.

When choosing sustainable bedding, look for certifications like GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and OEKO-TEX to ensure that you're investing in eco-friendly options.

Prioritise mindful skincare choices

What we put on our skin before bed plays a big part in our self-care rituals, but it also affects the planet. By Sarah’s skincare collection is designed to nourish your skin while being kind to the Earth. Our products, such as the Hero Facial Oil and Ally Recovery Facial Oil, are made with sustainably sourced, natural ingredients. They are also certified by The Vegan Society and Cruelty Free International, ensuring that they are both planet- and animal-friendly.

Beyond the ingredients, we are committed to sustainability in our packaging as well. All By Sarah packaging is recyclable, and we consciously avoid unnecessary plastics. Incorporating these products into your night time routine means choosing skincare that aligns with your values and supports both skin health and the planet.

Invest in timeless furniture

Instead of filling your bedroom with fast furniture that needs replacing every few years, consider investing in timeless, sustainably crafted pieces made from durable materials like reclaimed wood or responsibly sourced timber. These pieces not only add character to your bedroom but are also more likely to stand the test of time.

Look for furniture brands that focus on sustainability, using non-toxic finishes and working with eco-friendly materials. Additionally, second-hand furniture is a great way to reduce waste while adding a unique touch to your space on a budget.

Use detergents that are kind to your skin and the planet

Did you know that your conventional detergents often contain chemicals that are considered mildly toxic to people, pets, and the environment? These include chlorine, phthalates and formaldehyde. By choosing to wash your bedding with natural detergents, you’re choosing to prioritise both your health, your sleep, and the environment.

Not only are eco-friendly detergents less harmful to the environment, but they also mean less wear on the duvet which means they stay in a great condition for much longer. When you spend so many hours in your bed, you should definitely prioritise natural washing.
