Sustainability in the home: the bedroom

Whether you’ve come from our previous articles on sustainability in the home, where we explored some of the simple and easy changes you can make in your kitchen and bathroom, or you're looking for recommendations on transforming your home into a more green space, we’re delighted to have you here.

Did you know that the average adult spends around one third of their life in their bedroom? If you’re hoping to go green in your home, your bedroom is a great place to start. Not only does making sustainable choices in your bedroom help our planet, but it can also help you.

Simple, sustainable swaps

You can make a huge difference to your bedroom just by making a few quick and easy swaps. Our favourite is to choose LED lighting - not only are LEDs more energy efficient, saving your house heaps of electricity, but they also save you money. LED light bulbs can last up to 20 times longer than standard forms of lighting.

Look for eco-friendly, organic bedding, like linen. Made from flax (a natural, biodegradable material that requires no additional water to grow aside from rain), linen is eco-friendly and great value for money. The fabric is known for being hardwearing, and could last you for decades to come - therefore reducing waste and helping our environment.

While sustainability is often associated with the environment, it is important to also prioritise the people who produce our products. Make sure your bedding has been produced under fair labour conditions by looking for labels to prove it or quickly googling the brand you’re about to buy from.

Embrace plants

Here at By Sarah London, we truly believe that nature gives us all the answers. Not only do we use plant-based formulas in our products, but we also advise you to embrace plants in your bedroom for a greener, cleaner, and brighter environment.

Not only do plants provide a better indoor climate through absorption, significantly reducing both volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and carbon dioxide from the air by filtering the air you breathe every day, but they have been said to improve mental health. Studies have shown that people who are more connected to nature often find that their mental health improves dramatically, due to feeling more relaxed.

By Sarah London Lip and Hand Balm

Want to go a step further?  Why not keep the By Sarah London Lip and Hand Balm next to your bed, and treat your hands to the finest organic plant oils, chosen for their super repairing powers. Plant-based and guaranteed to leave your hands and lips feeling silky smooth, it's the multi-purpose jar of magic.

Choose natural and sustainable

Did you know that your conventional detergents often contain chemicals that are considered mildly toxic to people, pets, and the environment? These include chlorine, phthalates and formaldehyde. By choosing to wash your bedding with natural detergents, you’re choosing to prioritise both your health, your sleep, and the environment.

Not only are eco-friendly detergents less harmful to the environment, but they also mean less wear on the duvet which means they stay in a great condition for much longer. When you spend so many hours in your bed, you should definitely prioritise natural washing.

We hope you’ve been inspired by our collection of ideas that you can use in your home and we'd love to see how you're going green by sharing your photos with us on social media, tagging @bysarahlondon.
