Hyaluronic acid: the skin quencher that's also a postbiotic

There are so many efficacious skincare ingredients around but when formulating our By Sarah products, we're passionate about only working with the very best.

The crème de la crème of skin-boosters.

The proven powerhouses that truly deliver.

Hyaluronic acid is one such superstar – a true workhorse ingredient that skin totally loves. Not only can it hold 1000 times its own weight in water, scientists have discovered it offers serious benefits for our skin's microbiome, too. In short, it leaves skin hydrated, calm, strengthened and more youthful-looking.

What is hyaluronic acid and what are the benefits for skin?

Despite the name, hyaluronic acid isn't an 'acid,' like salicylic or glycolic, and it won't irritate your complexion. Instead, think of it as a supercharged magnet for moisture. The molecule naturally occurs in our skin and is able to bind and hold onto 1000 times its weight in water.

Central heating, harsh skincare, cold weather and ageing all deplete our skin of its natural hyaluronic acid levels, making skin more susceptible to dehydration. That's why the ingredient is such a great addition to any skincare routine. By trapping moisture into the skin, hyaluronic acid leaves it plump, bouncy, dewy and hydrated.

And due to its lightweight, watery texture and non-pore-blocking properties, it's ideal for every skin type including oily and acne-prone complexions. Remember, oily skin may have an excess of sebum but it can still be dehydrated and lacking in water.

How does hyaluronic acid help our skin microbiome?

Hyaluronic acid has long been known for its hydrating abilities. However, more recently scientists have discovered it's also a 'postbiotic' – which explains how it keeps skin so healthy and youthful-looking.

What's a postbiotic, you ask? Well, our skin boasts its very own microbiome – an incredible ecosystem, comprised of trillions of tiny microorganisms, acting as an army to strengthen, support and defend our skin. When our microbiome is out of whack, the health of our skin suffers.

'Probiotics' are the good bacteria that live on our skin while 'prebiotics' are the food that fuels these. (Our Reviver Hydrating Mist is a brilliant prebiotic skincare product). And 'postbiotics' refer to the 'waste' or by-product created when the probiotics feed on the prebiotics. It sounds pretty gross but this fermentation process is actually incredibly beneficial for skin, with the postbiotics releasing tonnes of nutrients.

All of this helps our microbiome thrive which in turn leads to happier, healthier skin.

How to use hyaluronic acid in a skincare routine

Since hyaluronic acid is a moisture magnet, it works best when applied to damp skin so it can pull all that glorious water right down into the deeper layers.

Want your own slice of the action? The ingredient is the star of our Saviour Moisture Mask.

By Sarah Saviour Moisture Mask

This skin-quenching gel face mask is absolutely bursting with our naturally-derived hyaluronic acid, offering the ultimate 'drink' for a thirsty, sensitive, dry or dehydrated complexion.

Paired with moisture-boosting aloe vera extract, it lends an unbelievable dose of hydration as well as that all-important skin microbiome support. You'll be left soothed, repaired, nourished and radiant – both immediately and beyond.

Best applied to clean, damp skin, it'll get to work in only ten minutes. We recommend cleansing first with our Balancer Cream Cleanser for a clean canvas. While skin is still a little damp, smooth on a few pumps of the Saviour Moisture Mask. Once removed, follow with a spritz of our Reviver Hydration Mist on to damp skin then lock everything in with your favourite By Sarah facial oil.

Whether you're a tired new mum, dehydrated from a flight, feeling sensitive after cancer treatment or suffering from tightness due to the change in season, the HA-loaded Saviour mask really is ready to come to your rescue.
