How skin develops with age

Our skin changes dramatically as we age, and knowing what to expect can really help to look after your skin in the best way possible. Here are some tips to preparing your skin for each stage in your skin journey, and ways to make your skin look and feel amazing.

Top up your hydration

Considering our bodies comprise up to 60% water, it’s not surprising that removing some of that can cause fine lines and wrinkles to become more prominent. As we get older, keeping our skin hydrated can become harder, which is why it’s important to replenish from both the inside and the outside.

  • Drink enough water (at least 2 litres every day)
  • Go for nourishing skin care ingredients that are going to repair your skin barrier and prevent moisture loss, such as our Saviour Moisture Mask which contains the much-loved hyaluronic acid and soothing aloe vera.
  • Avoid hot showers and baths which can dry skin further

Watch out for free radicals

We hear about them all the time, but what actually are they? Free radicals are unstable molecules and are often found in environmental pollutants. They’re missing all-important electrons, and so they ‘search’ for these electrons within their environment to re-stabilise themselves. Often, these extra electrons are taken from our DNA and other parts of our cells which can trigger collagen breakdown in our skin. Not good.

To prevent free radicals from stealing our electrons, the body uses a defence mechanism in the form of antioxidants. These bind to the free radicals which means that they can’t start taking electrons from healthy cells and causing damage to them. Here are some ingredients to look out for to build your antioxidant shield:

Cover up from UV rays

The sun can cause serious skin damage if you’re not protecting it properly. Like with free radicals, UV rays have a tendency to mess around with our DNA if they’re able to penetrate through our skin, which means wreaking havoc on our body. So layer up on your SPF and pull out the sun hats.

Easy does it

Tugging and pulling on your skin isn’t going to be doing you any favours when it comes to preventing wrinkles. And neither will abrasive and irritating ingredients. Like we always say, gentle and soothing natural ingredients can’t be beaten. Want to try some out for yourself? Try our 3-Step Essentials bundle, where you can try our community favourites with an added bonus of 17% off compared to purchasing the products individually.

Finally, when all is said and done, ageing is a natural part of life. Whilst we can try to prolong our youthful glow, fine lines and wrinkles are inevitable. Think of them like a sign of a good life, filled with happy memories, laughter and a regular smile.

Here’s to living a happy life, rather than a wrinkle-free life.
