Sunscreen Myths: Your guide to SPF for sensitive skin

Navigating the world of sun protection can be daunting, especially if you have sensitive skin. At By Sarah, we want you to feel in control and provide you with the knowledge and tools to support and boost your skin's health. That's why we've created this guide to debunk common sunscreen myths, from using SPF on a cloudy day to finding a sunscreen that won't clog pores.

Myth #1: You don't need sunscreen on cloudy days or when indoors.

Truth: UV rays can penetrate through clouds, so even on gloomy days your skin is exposed to UV radiation. In fact, up to 80% of UV rays can pass through clouds, making it essential to wear sunscreen regardless of the weather. Similarly, UV rays can penetrate windows and reach your skin even when you're indoors. This incidental exposure can still contribute to skin damage and premature ageing.

Myth #2: Sunscreen clogs up pores.

Truth: One common misconception about sunscreen is that it clogs pores, leading many to avoid it altogether. However, some SPFs are tackling this by developing formulas that are non-comedogenic, meaning they do not clog pores. These use ingredients that sit on top of the skin to block UV rays and prevent skin irritation.

We recommend looking for dermatologically tested sunscreens for sensitive skin, like our Serene Daily SPF 50+, because they are less likely to cause irritation or allergic reactions, especially if they contain hydrating and antioxidant-rich plant extracts for an extra skin boost. They are also less likely to clog pores, making them a great choice for blemish-prone skin

Myth #3: You only need to apply sunscreen once a day.

Truth: On days when you're working indoors during peak sun hours, you may only need to apply your SPF once. However, sunscreen can wear off due to sweat, water, or friction from clothing. Going on an afternoon run, or spending all day outside in the sun? We recommend reapplying your sunscreen throughout the day, especially on hotter days when you tend to sweat or the UV index is higher.

Myth #4: You don't need sunscreen on a plane.

Truth: When you're jetting off on holiday, SPF may be the last thing on your mind during your flight. However, UV exposure on aeroplanes is actually higher than on the ground due to higher altitudes, meaning there's less protection from UV rays. In particular, window glass on planes doesn't completely block UVA rays which are known for penetrating deeper into the skin and contributing to ageing and risks of skin damage.

Trip with the girls coming up, or a flight to a work conference? We recommend keeping a bottle of SPF in your carry-on for a mid-flight top up, plus spritzing the Reviver Hydrating Mist for instant prebiotic hydration.

Myth #5: SPF in my moisturiser is enough for sun protection.

Truth: While many face creams include SPF, relying solely on these products for sun protection doesn't provide adequate coverage. Most people apply moisturisers or other cosmetics in a thinner layer than sunscreen, which can significantly reduce the effectiveness of the SPF. It's recommended that you use the length of two fingers of sunscreen on your face, or more if you have sensitive skin.

For optimal protection, use a standalone sunscreen product with broad-spectrum protection and a PA++++ rating. This means you're getting the highest UVA and UVB protection available in a sunscreen.

Myth #6: Sunscreen is harmful to your health and should be avoided.

Truth: Recent anti-SPF trends on social media have raised concerns about the safety of sunscreen, but these claims often lack scientific backing. The NHS highlights that using sunscreen regularly reduces the risk of skin cancer, which is one of the most common cancers in the UK.

Health concerns from using SPF tend to centre around chemical sunscreens and the ingredients used within them. However, the UK's Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency has stated that the benefits of using sunscreens far outweigh any potential risks.

Choosing the right sunscreen for sensitive skin

When selecting a sunscreen, look for the following features:

  • Broad-spectrum protection: Provides defence against both UVA and UVB rays.
  • PA++++ rating: Provides the highest UVA protection available in a sunscreen.
  • Fragrance-free: Reduces the risk of irritation and allergic reactions.

We want to make applying sunscreen a part of your daily routine, even on the rainiest of days. Our Daily SPF 50+ is dermatologically tested and specifically formulated for sensitive skin.
