Bakuchiol: the high-science anti-ageing ingredient for sensitive skin

The rules around retinol are changing. New rules state that there will be a 0.3% retinol limit, leaving many mainstream brands scrambling to reformulate their products. And while a retinol can offer skin benefits, the risks of irritation, dryness, and sensitivity are very real, especially when over-used or used incorrectly.

If you’re looking to switch to a natural alternative, it’s time to embrace Bakuchiol that delivers similar results without any of the drawbacks.

What is bakuchiol?

Bakuchiol is a natural, plant-based compound derived from the seeds and leaves of the Psoralea corylifolia plant, commonly known as babchi. This plant has been used for centuries in traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, but it’s only recently that bakuchiol has gained recognition in the world of modern skincare. What makes bakuchiol particularly exciting is its ability to mimic the effects of retinol—a well-known anti-ageing powerhouse—without causing irritation, making it a perfect option for those with sensitive skin.

The science behind bakuchiol

Retinol is widely praised for its ability to accelerate cell turnover, boost collagen production, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. However, it often comes with a slew of side effects, such as dryness, redness, and peeling, which can be especially problematic for sensitive skin.

Bakuchiol, on the other hand, offers a gentler approach to achieving similar results. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study with 44 subjects, 0.5% bakuchiol was compared to 0.5% retinol for 12 weeks. Bakuchiol showed similar results in areas such as wrinkle surface area and pigmentation. But, crucially, the bakuchiol testers reported none of the irritation experienced by the testers using retinol. After the same period, users of our bakuchiol experienced a 20% reduction in wrinkle depth.

It also has antioxidant properties that protect the skin from free radical damage, further helping to maintain a youthful complexion. What’s more, bakuchiol has been found to have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, making it suitable for acne-prone skin as well.
