Sustainability in the home: the bathroom

Whether you've come from the first part of our sustainability in the home series, where we explored some simple and easy changes you can make in your kitchen, or you're simply looking to kickstart your green journey in your home, we're glad to have you, and together we can truly make a difference.

Though it's often the smallest room in the house, the bathroom can harbour huge amounts of waste. By making a few simple swaps, you can transform your bathroom into a green, eco-friendly and sustainable space.

Ditch the plastic; choose biodegradable and recyclable

According to Inside Packaging, the beauty industry is the top offender for creating plastic waste, contributing to 120 billion units of packaging every year.

With most of it not being recyclable and ultimately ending up in landfill, we must choose our beauty products carefully, paying attention to packaging that is biodegradable, reusable and recyclable.

At By Sarah, we believe that nature has provided us with all the answers. This is why we use amber glass bottles and fully recyclable packaging. This means there is minimal waste sent to landfill. Plus, glass is endlessly recyclable and when it does eventually break down, it returns to its original state, silica sand.

Sustainable swaps

One of the biggest culprits hiding in your bathroom is the single-use cotton wool pad. According to the World Wildlife Fund, it takes 20,000 litres of water to produce 1kg of cotton, which would have travelled incredibly far to get to a supermarket shelf. Worse, single-use cotton wool pads cannot be recycled, and can take up to 800 years to fully decompose.

A sustainable, eco-friendly solution? Reusable makeup remover pads and cloths. Often, these come in a small mesh bag which allows these pads to be washed with the rest of your clothing in a washing machine, reducing the cost and environmental impact your regular cotton wool pads have. You can use these with your By Sarah skincare: simply apply your Balancer Cream Cleanser and massage it into the skin, rinse it off, and pat your face using a reusable cloth to dry the skin and leave it feeling silky and smooth.

Another great sustainable swap for your bathroom is the bamboo toothbrush. With the average person using over 300 toothbrushes during their lifetime, the environmental impact of so much synthetic plastic ending up in landfill is extremely damaging for our planet. Here's some top tips from our friends at Wild and Stone:

“It's not easy to go completely plastic-free, but you can get started by making small, attainable changes and taking a moment to think before you purchase something. Get started by doing something little, like minimising single plastic use on the go or creating a plastic free bathroom. All of these small steps add up to a bigger, greater wave of change.”

Choose ethical, plant-based products

By choosing ethical beauty products, you’re also choosing sustainability, the environment, and your skin. Our By Sarah products have been expertly formulated to ensure that each ingredient is carefully chosen to nourish and restore your skin. We only use the finest natural and cold-pressed ingredients in our collection, handmade in small batches in the UK.

Look out for the certified B-corporation logo, as this means that the products have been verified to meet high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability. It really is the gold standard in sustainability and we are proud to be the first UK independently-owned and female-founded skincare brand to have achieved B Corp status.
