Factors that contribute to eczema

Eczema can appear as a small patch on the body or can be more severe on the face and hands or the insides of the elbows and backs of the knees. There are several factors that may contribute to eczema, from stress and cold weather to certain foods (such as dairy) and harsh washing detergents. Keep a diary of your skincare journey and experiences to help identify when your skin is most uncomfortable and what triggers any eczema breakouts.

How to reduce eczema triggers

Look at your household products

Whether it's your washing detergent or a perfume, there are certain products that can disrupt your skin's barrier function and affect your skin's microbiome. This can make your skin feel itchy, dry and very uncomfortable, prompting eczema to appear on the skin. Choose natural and plant-based household products where you can that are more delicate on the skin.

Ventilate your home

Hot and stuffy environments can also irritate eczema-prone skin so keep your home well-ventilated, even during the winter months, or look into investing in a humidifier to add moisture to the air, you could even add a drop or two of your favourite essential oil to scent the air.

Keep things cool

Try to avoid hot showers and baths as they can strip the skin of its own natural oils and leave your skin more prone to dryness, irritation and eczema. If you're looking to increase your circulation too, try a cold shower which has mental health and autoimmune health benefits.

Natural skincare for eczema

Plant oils are easily absorbed by the lipidic layers of the skin to deliver essential nutrients. This is because their molecular structure is so similar to our own skin cells, making plant oils the perfect partner for eczema.

Hydrating and gentle cleanser

Choose a gentle, hydrating plant-based cleanser that will not disrupt your skin's natural pH balance. Try our Balancer Oil-to-milk Cleanser, blended with soothing marula seed and olive squalane to help your skin retain moisture.

Plant based organic face oil

Follow your morning and evening facial cleanse with a few drops of our restorative Hero Facial Oil, abundant in a variety of omegas, minerals and vitamins A, B, C and E to help strengthen your skin's natural barrier function.

"I have very very dry, eczema prone skin on my face and neck, this is the first time I’ve used this oil and it’s amazing, it’s the only product that is able to keep my skin hydrated all day. I used to have apply moisturiser multiple times a day. So happy I’ve finally found a product that works for me, thank you." - Sarah C., customer review
