Why upcycled hemp is the new salicylic acid

For acne and blemish prone skin, salicylic acid is often the first port of call. But so many of you have told us that using this acid has actually aggravated your skin and made it worse. It's why in our new Hemp-Infused Blemish Recovery Oil, we have sourced upcycled hemp seed oil as the hero ingredient to target blemishes and help the skin to recover.

What is salicylic acid?

Salicylic acid is found in plants such as the willow and meadowsweet. It's found in numerous acne-focused skincare products and is often mixed with benzoyl peroxide (primarily an antimicrobial agent). If derived from willow bark, it is better known as a beta hydroxy acid (BHA), an oil-soluble ingredient that can penetrate skin through the lipid layers.

How does salicylic acid work?

Salicylic acid is a potent ingredient and works by breaking down keratin in the surface layer of the skin which helps to unblock pores. Its main purpose is to promote exfoliation and dissolve excess sebum, and target whiteheads and blackheads.

Why should you avoid saliclyic acid?

The primary and most common negative side effect of salicylic acid is its ability to irritate and dry the skin for those with sensitive skin or where it is overused. Prolonged use of salicylic acid can deprive the skin of its protective barrier, resulting in greater exposure to bacteria and environmental pollutants. This can create a negative feedback loop which further exacerbates the blemishes in the skin that the acid was supposed to treat. For mums-to-be, salicylic acid is also one to avoid.

Why use upcylced hemp seed oil instead?

Our Hemp-Infused Blemish Recovery Oil is blended with 100% upcycled hemp seed oil; a plant based ingredient which is kinder to acne and blemish-prone skin and contains natural standardised CBD and a rich source of linoleic acid.

CBD (cannabinoids) has been used to treat and soothe inflammatory skin conditions, including acne, and the linoleic acid in the hemp plays a vital role in nourishing and strengthening the skin barrier to aid recovery. The antioxidant rich upcycled hemp seed oil also contains 52% more antioxidants than standard hemp seed oil to strengthen your skin's resilience and natural defences.
