How to Use a Gua Sha

Everything you need to know about the Rose Quartz Gua Sha Facial Tool

Finding those moments in your day to be truly present and mindful takes practice. Some days it can be easier than others to find those mindful moments that make you feel grounded and bring a sense of calm to your otherwise full-on day. But one thing you do everyday is apply your skincare.

Using a Gua Sha takes your facial routine to a new level of empowered mindfulness

Designed to enhance your everyday skincare ritual, this deeply-relaxing and meditative practice rejuvenates skin for a healthy, radiant glow. The Gua Sha is the first tool we've introduced to our collection and it's one I'm very excited to share with you!

What is a Gua Sha?

Gua Sha (gwa sha) is a tool which has been used for centuries as part of traditional Chinese medicine to redirect chi (energy) flow in the body where it has become blocked and causes tension and inflammation. The tool is typically made from rose quartz, jade, bone or horn and is used as a self-care technique by scraping across the skin. The movement redirects the flow of energy which reduces inflammation, eases tensions and actively promotes lymph drainage and circulation. You may have seen the Gua Sha pop up on Instagram or online; its become increasingly popular as more of us incorporate wellness, self-care and Ayurvedic practices into our lives.

What are the benefits?

The Gua Sha tool promotes healthy, radiant skin and is enjoyed as part of your everyday skincare routine. The Gua Sha we're thrilled to share with you is made from handcrafted natural rose quartz crystals. We chose this special stone because it is linked to the heart chakra; has meanings of unconditional love; and is associated with letting go of trapped energies and emotions. The Egyptians believed that the stone could prevent wrinkles and the effects of ageing.

When used as a facial massage tool, its key benefit is to encourage the lymphatic system's natural detoxification process. The Gua Sha helps to tone muscles, reduce puffiness, assist in reducing fine lines and plump skin, and relieve any tension, particularly in your jaw or underneath your cheek bones. It's the spa experience you can enjoy every day from the comfort of your own home.

How do I use a Gua Sha?

There are several different ways you can use a Gua Sha and it can be a case of finding what works best for you. I've set out below the 5-Step BY SARAH Technique as I have found this is the most beneficial way to enjoy the Gua Sha.

Start With Clean Skin
Start by cleansing your skin every evening with the Green Clay Cleansing Balm and then applying 2-3 drops of the Organic Facial Oil to slightly damp skin.

1. Create a Sweeping Motion
Using very gentle strokes, start to glide the Gua Sha up and down the side of your neck from just underneath your ear lobe downwards towards your collarbone to promote lymph drainage.
2. Move on to Your Chin and Jawline
Placing the top groove of the Gua Sha in the centre of your chin, gently sweep outwards to your ear. Repeat 5 times.
3. Work Upwards and Outwards
Next, move upwards by placing the bottom edge of the Gua Sha at the corner of your nostrils and sweeping outwards underneath your cheekbones towards the middle of your ears. Repeat 5 times.
4. Take Care Around Your Eye Area
As you then move up underneath your eye area, be very gentle. The skin underneath the eye is 10 times more fragile, so it's important to never drag or pull the skin here. Simply apply the same outward sweeping motion underneath your eye, gently placing the Gua Sha on your eye bone moving out towards your temple and hairline. Repeat 5 times.
5. Finish Where You Started
Gently place the curved side of the Gua Sha in the middle of your forehead and slowly sweep outwards towards your hairline, repeating this motion 5 times. Complete your ritual where you started, by sweeping the Gua Sha downwards from underneath your ear lobes towards your collarbone. Rinse after use, ready for use tomorrow. Do not use the Gua Sha on any broken skin, moles, cuts or bruises.

How can it be used as part of mindfulness?

When using our organic, plant-based skincare, you already know that you're feeding your skin with nutrient-rich ingredients that have flourished in soils free from synthetic pesticides and artificial chemical fertilisers. And with all the ingredients listed in full on the front label, you know exactly what you're putting on your skin.

Empowered with this knowledge, you can be fully present with the action of the Gua Sha on your skin and think of all the skin-boosting vitamins, omegas, antioxidants and fatty acids being absorbed by your skin and promoting your skin's health.

Incorporate three deep breaths at the start and end of your facial massage, expressing gratitude for a special moment in your day.

I hope you love using the Gua Sha as part of your skincare ritual. We're available to answer any questions you might have about using the Gua Sha by contacting us at hello@bysarahlondon.com or via the Live Chat icon. And you can see more on our Instagram highlights!
