It all began with this very question. Prior to launching BY SARAH, I would often spend hours scrutinizing the back of labels on skincare products, and was often left disappointed and confused at trying to understand exactly what was inside many skincare ranges.
I found that many skincare products were laden with synthetic chemicals, which provide no benefits to our skin, but are often used as preservatives, thickeners or to provide fragrance. BHT (banned in the EU but not the US) is a common preservative used to extend a product’s shelf-life to eight years! Would you want to put a product on your skin that’s potentially 8 years old? At BY SARAH, we wouldn’t! And actually, after time, using synthetic chemicals depletes our skin’s ability to nurture and replenish itself, which means you’re going to look undernourished and older (gah!)
I also found that many skincare products were claiming to be “all-natural” or “organic” when in fact only a very small percentage of their ingredients had been grown in soil vs. being artificially produced in a lab.
I read an excellent article recently by Veronika Webster, “Advertising Wellness: How Far is too Far?”, where she brought my attention to a product that used to be sold in Boots UK Ltd called "Little Me Organics". The Advertising Standards Agency found it to be misleading because less than 5% of the ingredients were organic.
According to the Soil Association, if a product is labelled as “organic” and wishes to receive the ‘stamp of approval' and be certified as Cosmos Organic (a worldwide standard), at least 95% of its ingredients must be organic.
At BY SARAH, we are pioneering upfront labelling in organic skincare in the UK. For each and every product that we hand-blend and handcraft, we detail a full ingredient list on the front of each product, with their scientific names on the reverse. Our Organic Facial Oil is 99% organic and 100% natural and contains certified-organic almond oil, apricot oil, pumpkin seed oil, argan oil, evening primrose oil and vitamin E. Nothing more, nothing less. (The 1% non-organic refers to the Vitamin E, which cannot be obtained via organic farming, but is 100% natural and GM-free).
We're passionate about pioneering upfront labelling in organic skincare in the UK, so you know exactly what you're giving your skin. Head on over to our ''Ask Sarah" page to have all your skincare questions answered or drop us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org - we’d love to hear from you!
